Ernst Kirchner "Artillerymen" 1915
Artmark is a blog by the painter Mark Warren where he shows his work and comments on various art and cultural matters in a very subjective manner. He loves to show underappreciated artists and some rather bizarre historical images. He does not like Andy Warhol!

ReplyDeleteI saw this painting yesterday at the Guggenheim. It was the last painting in an exhibit of "the Great Upheaval" in art, history, science and society, ending in 1915.
No question, though, what the painting evokes in the viewer - from thirty years in the future, now 65 years in the past.
In his own mind it may have expressed his own vulnerability and that of his fellow enlisted men in a time of war, but it has a timeless, universal appeal - or horror.
